Community Involvement
To grow and prosper, communities require care. It is the work of many hands, sharing many talents, many hours, and many gifts. The members of The Virginia Group share this commitment to the community in which we live and work.
The Northwestern Mutual Foundation in the Richmond Community
On May 31, 2011, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation awarded ART 180 a grant in the amount of $20,000 to support their mission of Turning Young Lives and Communities Around Through Art. ART 180 creates and provides art-related programs for young people living in challenging circumstances, encouraging personal and community change through self-expression. ART 180 is based in Richmond. The Northwestern Mutual Foundation gave two times the amount requested by the organization, responding to a $10,000 request for funding with a $20,000 grant! Eric Van Der Hyde, Financial Representative in Richmond, VA, has volunteered with ART 180 for many years and now serves on the Board of Directors. In a letter to the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, ART 180 Executive Director, Marlene Paul, wrote: “We are utterly thrilled to receive the Northwestern Mutual Foundation’s $20,000 contribution…and are truly grateful that you believe in the power of art and creative expression to turn lives—and communities—around, and that you have shared so generously with us to advance that goal.”
